ikea play kitchen remodel
okay, guys!
let’s talk about this ikea kitchen “remodel” as i’ve been calling it...
this was one of the most fun + satisfying projects I’ve ever done! and that’s saying a lot coming from someone who is usually over these types of projects before i even start them.
as long as you plan and give yourself plenty of time to get things ordered and painted, it’s a super easy project.
here’s the kitchen we ordered from IKEA — it’s only $89! It’s definitely one of the cheapest options, which was great because i don’t want to talk about how much i spent on play food and accessories...woopsieee.
hop on Pinterest for lots of different inspo pics! ive literally been pinning these kitchens for months, so i had a pretty good idea of what i wanted it to look like.
first, get that baby unboxed, take a deep breath, and lay all of your pieces out. this is the part where i was like...k, maybe i don’t want to do this project after all. but it’s not as bad as it looks, i promise!
pull out the pieces you plan on painting. for me, it was all of the white pieces…I wanted to leave all of the natural wood alone.
after doing some research, i went ahead and decided to use spray paint to paint the cabinets! people have lots of feeling about spray paint...there are less toxic options out there. but here’s what i learned about spray paint: it is effectively non-toxic once fully dry. there’s a chain of reactions that takes place for spray paint to solidify and that’s when it’s emitting those toxic vapors. so simply put, if you can’t smell it anymore, it’s good to go. most of the popular spray paint companies said to plan on about a week for the paint to be fully cured. we’ll be at a little over a week on a Christmas Day! that’s why it’s important to get your supplies early.
for the cabinets, i chose krylon colormaster paint + primer in the color almond and for the faucet, rod and hooks, i chose krylon colormaster brushed metallic paint in the color nickel. i painted the sink white! i could not be happier with how the colors turned out! they look so good with the natural wood + the “backsplash.”
i also decided to ditch the plastic and use natural wood for all of the handles! i was too impatient to wait on my husband, so i literally used a hand saw and a sander to make these babies myself. each one is 6 inches long! i used wood glue to glue them on, clamped them, and let them sit for about 8 hours before messing with them again. pretty sure the strongest man alive wouldn’t be able to get those things off.
for the backsplash, i bought this peel and stick terrazzo wallpaper from target! i’m obsessed. i want to do a wall in the girls’ room once we move. the kitchen comes with a little board to slide in behind the top shelves, but the part behind the sink is open. so i bought a foam poster board from hobby lobby, cut it with an exacto knife, and put the wallpaper on it before attaching it to the back of the kitchen. i also bought little round knobs at hobby lobby and super glued them on for oven knobs!
i’m still waiting on my cane webbing to get here...it’s lost somewhere in FedEx land! but eventually I’ll cover the windows in the microwave + oven with it.
for accessories, i got a bunch of little knick-knacks at hobby lobby. this cooking set and coffee maker from amazon, this wood food from Melissa + Doug, this PRECIOUS shopping cart from Pottery Barn Kids, and the mixer is from Anthropologie but it’s out of stock :(
that’s it y’all! my husband jokes that I love this kitchen more than Margot’s going to love it, and he’s probably right. but there’s nothing better than aesthetically pleasing toys, can i get an amen?!
y’all let me know if you have any questions! im happy to answer if i missed anything, which i’m sure i did! happy holidays, friends <3
